What Do Bubblers Do in a Fish Tank

A bubbler is any device that is connected to an air pump through an air tube. The purpose of a bubbler is to create air bubbles inside your fish tank.

While it may not seem like it, all creates need oxygen to survive, including fish, who get their oxygen from the water.

In any tank or aquarium, the fish will need a steady stream of oxygen, having a bubbler in the tank releases air bubbles which contain oxygen and provide the fish with her air they need.

A bubbler essentially prevents the fish from being starved on oxygen in the waste that there are many fish, or even waste consuming bacteria in the tank that also require oxygen.

A bubbler also allows a natural bacterial filtration to take place in your tan without the fish being starved of oxygen.

Are bubblers good for fish tanks?

Bubblers are very good for fish tanks. Obviously, the biggest reason that they are good for fish tanks is that they provide oxygen to the fish.

Besides providing the aeration, air helps the water to move, and it drives away unwanted elements in the water and pushes them to the surface.

If you were to have a large tank, of 20-gallons or more, with many fish, you would have to invest in a bubbler. Doing so can be very beneficial to your fish in the case that they are lacking the oxygen that they require in order to survive.

What Do Bubblers Do in a Fish Tank

Be sure to be careful with a bubbler through, as even though they can be very useful in providing sufficient oxygen to your fish, they can be dangerous on occasion, and you should make sure that you get one that is made suitable for your tank.

Keep the bubbles on low, just enough to provide sufficient oxygen to the fish in your tank, but do not overdo it, never turn the bubbler up all the way, it can hurt your fish.

Do aquariums need bubblers?

Not every tank or aquarium requires a bubbler. Some do and some do not. But you can figure out easily whether or not you need a bubbler for your tank.

Some filters will require a bubbler in order to work properly, other filters can benefit greatly from a bubbler being involved, and some don’t need one. Corner filters and gravel filters in particular require air pumps to make sure that the filtration system operates as it should.

Do not forget, some aquarium decorations require an air pump in order for them to function as intention.

Then certain animals, such as newts, shrimps, crabs, and frogs will need optimal circulation in their tanks, if they do not get this, they may crawl out of their tank in search of oxygen. This is a prime example of having a bubbler is an obvious choice.

Does a saltwater tank need a bubbler?

It is possible to use a bubbler in a saltwater tank. Though there is a bit more of a hold-up on the use of bubblers in saltwater tanks than there are for freshwater tanks.

With a saltwater aquarium you may be better off with a power head. With a saltwater tank you can also see an issue where a bubbler can cause salt creep which can in turn cause irregular salinity.

However, there are always pros and cons about anything, and it is still viable to use a bubbler in a saltwater tank, if you do not feel comfortable doing.

There are plenty of alternatives, and if you do want to use one but are feeling cautious, then it is worth remembering that caution and regular maintenance will often stop many problems in the first place.

It is really a choice, bubblers can be used, but they are not vital, there are alternatives for you to use. And, it is also dependent on the set-up you have and what aquatic life you have too.

Are air stones good for aquariums?

We wouldn’t say its do or die, but having an air stone can be very important to your tanks residents. Being a fish in an aquarium that then suddenly gets an air stone, is a bit like if you were to stand in a hot and stuffy room and then someone opened the window.

It does not matter if you have a filter or not, having an air stone can boost the oxygen levels and improve the air circulation in the water of the tank.

An air stone will also keep the aquarium water cleaner, providing many health benefits to your aquatic residents. They are very good for aquariums. Do not think they are faultless though, there are some faults that can be found, as is with anything.

Make sure that any air stone is compatible with your set-up, as well as your aquatic life, before you buy it, it is best to be sure rather than reap the aftereffects of a mistake. Most of the time, there is no fault in the purchase of an air stone.

How long do aquarium air stones last?

Like pretty much anything in an aquarium, an air stone can last a very long time, so long s it does not get all clogged up. You should concern yourself more with the maintenance of the air stone, than worrying about it networking.

Generally you should clean your air stone every six months, along with all your aquarium equipment. All aquarium equipment should undergo a clean and maintenance twice a year, or every six months in order to make sure that it is all working well, cleaning, and that there are no clogs.

There is no lifespan of an air stone, even so, they are not very expensive and should yours stop working it should not cost you more than just a few collars to grab yourself a new one.

While we say an air stone should be cleaned every 6 months, do be sure to check yourself, for some people it is weeks, for some people 3 months, for some six. It depends on your tank.
